The Hardin Hills Run is on a scenic stretch of the Iowa River Greenbelt and traverses three county parks, including Pine Ridge Park, Sac & Fox Overlook, and Sand Springs Wildlife Area. The trail is very hilly, with a total elevation change of over 500 feet on the 5K and 1,600 feet on the 15K. The prairie trails are mowed, although they will not be leveled and the ground may be rough. The timber trails have been cleared of fallen limbs and large stumps, but they will not be leveled either.
Throughout the race the trail will be rough, and extremely steep in some areas; so much so that you may need to walk or even crawl up certain natural obstacles. The race will also involve a shallow crossing of the Iowa River, and we will have event volunteers stationed at the river crossing for safety. There will also be multiple aid stations along the race path equipped with first aid supplies, water, and bananas. Both the 5K and the 15K races will be extreme; please choose the appropriate race for your skill level. Watch the weather and dress appropriately for the race day weather conditions.
This race is about having fun and challenging yourself, so please come out, bring a friend, and enjoy the Hardin Hills Run! The race will start and finish at Pine Ridge Park. Stick around afterward for food and prizes.
Major Landmark: The Interstate 20 Bridge
This race course is just south of the I-20 Bridge; you know that huge bridge west of Waterloo and east of Interstate 35? When crossing the bridge, look to the south and see a big building with a copper roof, that is the Sac & Fox Overlook; one of the county parks the race will go through.
